Andy and Rowena Whiteman - The Background!

Having dropped out of 'corporate life', we bought the Harris Arms in December 2003 with the goal of serving fantastic food, with great wines at fair prices along with lovely local beers.

Andy has been traveling since his 18th birthday and has landed in many ports (including Portgate!) throughout his life. Now in his 60's, he still refuses to grow up and continues to think that the world is full of possibilities.

Rowena on the other hand is very grown up - having cut her teeth milking cows on a Kibbutz she is the steadying influence on her somewhat errant husband. Since then she has excelled on her wine making course in New Zealand, winning a silver medal for her Pinot Gris (with a little help from Andy), and wooed the local vignerons in the Languedoc Rousillon region of France during an entertaining but ultimately fruitless search for a vineyard in 2002
