A Little History.
The Mussel Inn is just above the seaside hamlet of Heybrook Bay which itself lies on the entrance to the Yealm estuary.
In the mid 18th century the Yealm was a hotbed of smuggling and with the Mew Stone being a hazard to shipping at the time, a convenient guardpost for the activities of this brotherhood!
Contraband would find its way up the hill from Heybrook bay where Down Thomas was used as a store depot prior to distribution.
Due to its location The Mussel Inn was an integral part of this business operation and tea, silks, ivories and brandy, wine and tobacco were all common contraband to the area.
